HARMONIX MUSIC VR

Harmonix Music VR is a collection of music-based experiences that launched alongside PSVR on October 13th, 2016. Ranging from trippy to super trippy, the experiences of Music VR are a mix of passive and interactive worlds designed to evoke a balance between a creative mind-state and music appreciation.

It is music visualizer and creative toolset released on October 13, 2016, as a launch title for the PlayStation VR. It allows users to experience their own music library in virtual reality by plugging a USB drive into their PS4, which the software analyzes to generate reactive environments. The "game" is primarily a collection of four distinct interactive worlds:

  • The Easel: A creative mode where you use PlayStation Move controllers to paint in 3D space. Your drawings pulse, vibrate, and change color in sync with the beat.

  • The Dance: A playful environment where you choreograph dance moves for wacky characters in a high school gym. You can also interact with objects at a DJ booth or enter "Giant Mode" to manipulate the dancers.

  • The Beach: A relaxing, passive experience set on an alien planet. You sit on a beach and gaze at various elements like flying lanterns or seashells to trigger visual sequences timed to the music.

  • The Trip: An abstract, psychedelic journey where you travel through a kaleidoscopic tunnel of shapes and patterns that shift according to the song's energy and rhythm.

  • I worked on the prototypes and environment art in all of these worlds, but I was primarily responsible for The Trip and created almost all of the art in that 3D music visualizer..
